Minimum Admission Requirements (Bachelor’s Degree Pass)

Note: Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the university. The university has a certain number of faculty slots approved by the Ministry of Higher Education and Training. Final selection will be affected by study location availability, academic performance and other admission requirements (if any).

Applicants require the following to be considered for entry into any of the five faculties:

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC), or Independent Examinations Board (IEB), or South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) subjects, and
  • Certain levels of achievement as well as a Bachelor’s degree pass.

Wits tabulates the points score for all subjects on the following basis:

  • Must adopt English as their native language or first additional language
  • Mathematics is a core compulsory subject for all mathematics programs in commerce, law and management, engineering and the built environment, science, and most health undergraduate programs.
  • LLB, Education, and Humanities consider mathematical ability (except Speech Pathology and Audiology).
  • When calculating the Admissions Score (APS), Wits does not distinguish between designated and non-designated courses.
  • The APS calculation is based on the top 7 subjects including life orientation (department-specific subjects must also be included in the calculation).
  • Further Studies (previously AP) subjects are also included in the APS calculation
Please see the Guide for Applicants or specific online course entries for APS and other requirements.
