National Benchmark Tests (NBTs)
They have been found unhelpful for placement by UNIZULU & are not used. Placement into mainstream or extended (foundation) programs is dependent on the points score achieved in NSC or NCV and is facilitated by the faculty which houses the particular foundation program. Foundation programs are designed to support students who, while qualifying to enter a program, are considered to be at risk as a result of a weak NSC score. UNIZULU has a science and commerce foundation program. Admission interviews are held with students for some professional qualifications like a B in Nursing degree and B in Social Work to assess the suitability of the applicant for the profession.

ADMISSION TO DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES(after 2007)
A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of instruction at the higher education institution, as verified by Umalusi, as well as an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 4049%) or higher in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects, are the minimum requirements for admission. Additionally, candidates must have a Life Orientation achievement rate of 3 (40%) and an English as First Additional Language (FAL) achievement level of 3 (40%) or 4 (50%);
ADMISSION TO HIGHER CERTIFICATE
A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum level 2 (30% or above) in the language of instruction at the higher education institution as well as one home language as recognized by the Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi) is the prerequisite for admission. Additionally, candidates need to have four NSC 20 credit subjects that are recognized. Depending on the institution and the program, specific combinations of recognized NSC courses and levels of achievement may be necessary. For instance, a college might decide that a Higher Certificate in Marketing also needs a certain degree of English proficiency and a related, accepted course, in addition to the NSC.
