FACULTY OF LAW

It brings them great pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Law at the University of Fort Hare (UFH). This goes out to prospective students, current students, parents, guardians, friends of the Faculty, stakeholders, and staff members. In response to this vision, the Faculty refreshed its own and narrowed its focus on the goal of turning the Faculty of Law into a hub of excellence in education, learning, research, and innovation, driven by an unwavering dedication to justice and fairness.

Enrolling for a Degree in Law at UFH

The only recognized degree for practicing law is the LLB nowadays. Before the new LLB program was introduced in 1998, individuals with a B Proc or B Juris were qualified to practice law, and those with a B Proc or B Juris might work as prosecutors or magistrates in the government. Programs for B Proc and B Juris have been discontinued. Currently, a four-year first-degree program in the LLB is offered. Holders of a B Proc, B Juris, BA, or any other undergraduate degree are also eligible for the LLB program.

Bachelor of Laws- Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) (5-Year Programme)

The five-year extended Foundation Year Programme (21526) – This requires an applicant to be in possession of a school leaving qualification that meets the legal minimum requirement for admission to degree study in South Africa – in the form of either the new National Senior Certificate (NSC) or a matriculation exemption/endorsement. However, applicants who do not satisfy the said legal minimum requirement may be admitted under the University’s Senate Discretionary Exemption (SDE) dispensation. They will have to meet additional curriculum requirements

Bachelor of Laws – (4-Year Programme)

The LLB is now the only degree recognized for entry into the legal profession. The qualifications that a person must fulfill in order to be admitted to study for the degree depending on the qualification they currently hold and the LLB degree choice they intend to pursue.

As stated in General Rule 2.6 and Annexure 7 of the Faculty Prospectus, “A student who wishes to register for any program in law, may be required by Senate to submit testimonials in support of his/her application for admission; and/or o Attend an interview; and/or o Undergo an admission test.”

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This requires an applicant to be in possession of a school leaving qualification that meets the legal minimum requirement for admission to degree study in South Africa – in the form of either the new National Senior Certificate (NSC) or a matriculation exemption/endorsement. However, applicants who do not satisfy the said legal minimum requirement may be admitted under the University’s Senate Discretionary Exemption (SDE) dispensation in which event they will have to satisfy additional curriculum requirements.

LAW FACULTY ORIENTATION INFORMATION

The Faculty of Law holds a two-day orientation program for new students at the commencement of
a new academic year. The Programme is coordinated by the Dean and includes a series of presentations to the students on:

  • The general and faculty rules and regulations applicable to law students;
  • The various branches/subject areas of law and the LLB curriculum;
  • The various vocational/career opportunities available to law graduates;
  • The available teaching and learning resources/ opportunities;
  • The legal professions and their requirements /expectations of law graduates; and
  • The responsibilities of law students.

The session also includes a focused tour of the law section of the university library. All new undergraduate students must participate in the orientation program.
