University of Fort Hare Bcom Accounting Requirements

Do you have a strong interest in numbers and desire to work in accounting? Look no farther than the BCom Accounting program at the University of Fort Hare. This prestigious university provides students with a thorough education that gives them the information and abilities they need to succeed in the fast-paced field of finance and accounting. It is crucial to comprehend the exact requirements for admission into the BCom Accounting degree before beginning this fascinating academic adventure.

Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), Advanced Diploma in Accounting (ADA), Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA)

These credentials give students the chance to follow the Chartered Accountancy route to the SAICA designation as a Chartered Accountant (South Africa), providing them with the opportunity to become responsible leaders who behave ethically and create sustainable value for a wide range of stakeholders within an organizational context.

The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree is a three- or four-year degree. Students are chosen for the three- or four-year degree depending on their Matric math and English test scores. For our degrees, college-level accounting is not a requirement.

Students who have earned a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) with a major in Accounting, Governance and Auditing, Management Accounting, or Finance and Taxation may continue on to PGDA, a one-year course that enables them to sit for the SAICA qualifying exams (ITC, or Initial Test of Competency).

Bachelor of Commerce (General Accounting)

The General Accounting degree is designed to give students a broad understanding of accounting and provides a more practical business focus than the Accounting degree.  These students may choose to register with another accounting professional body such as ACCA or the South African Institute of Professional Accountants.

Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting

The course content offered by the UFH Department of Accounting is alligned with the requirements of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and with the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).

Entry requirements

The entry requirements are as follows:

  • Bachelor of Commerce degree from a SAICA accredited institution;
  • An abscence from studying of no more than 1 year;
  • 55% for Accounting; and
  • 55% on average for the other three subjects (management accounting, taxation and auditing).

Bachelor of Commerce Honours (taxation)

The UFH Department of Accounting offers a Bachelor of Commerce Honours (taxation) program. This is a full-time one year honours degree specialising in South African taxation. The honours degree contains a taxation course, an assignment course, a research methodology course and a final essay component.

Entry requirements:

  • 60% average results for Taxation 3
  • An entrance essay or nn entrance exam may be required.

Advanced Diploma in Accounting (ADA) (bridging programme)

This is a programme that provides access to the Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting programme (PG Dip Acc) to students who otherwise do not qualify.

Admissions and re-admissions requirements to this programme are as follows:

  • Students must have either:
  • obtained a SAICA accredited Bachelor’s degree in Accounting*; or
  • obtained a UFH B.com General Accounting degree (60014)* and pass an Accounting entrance exam for admission into this programme; or
  • obtained a Bachelors degree in Accounting (non SAICA accredited)* from another institution and achieved an average mark of at least 60%; or
  • obtained a Bachelors degree in Accounting (non SAICA accredited)* from another institution, having attempted the full SAICA accredited syllabus, but was not successful in all courses.**
  • Which is not older than two years AND the degree must have been completed in the minimum  required amount of time “plus one additional year”

This requirement is subject to the discretion of the Head of Department.
