The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a famous institution that offers a number of internship opportunities to its students. Internships at UCT can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months and are often set up as part-time or full-time programs. Both undergraduate and graduate students can use them, as well as, occasionally, recent graduates.

INTERNSHIPS – REQUIREMENTS & APPLICATION
The GHJRU administers a thorough internship program designed to provide young activists and academics with knowledge, expertise, and experience in the area of gender-based violence. We accept applications all year long from recent graduates. Intakes typically begin in January, and interns typically work with us for a minimum of three months and a maximum of twelve. Case-by-case exceptions to the starting dates and length of stay may be made.
Graduates who have demonstrated an interest in the advancement of human rights, notably the right to be free from violence and the right to health, through their earlier activities are considered successful applicants. Most are particularly interested in gender and women’s studies, public health, and criminal justice policy. Most of them want to stay employed in this field when they graduate.
Interns can apply directly to the Unit or via a collaboration with their university. Every intern gives their full participation to the work and pursuits of the Unit. Since these internships are unpaid, applicants must ensure they have the resources to support themselves during the internship.
The operating needs of the Unit will determine how you spend your time there, but we anticipate that you will devote at least half of your time to Unit work. You can broaden your expertise by working on a variety of projects as an intern, both those that have a defined project allocated to them and those that need ad hoc research support.

DST-NRF Internships at UCT
The DST-NRF Internship Programme offers unemployed Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) graduates and postgraduates (including those in Social Sciences and Humanities) an opportunity to acquire practical work experience through mentoring and exposure to a research environment. Each year UCT hosts DST-NRF interns across several departments. South African undergraduates in their final year, Honours students, and Masters students in their final year who are interested in interning at the ACDI or in other UCT departments are encouraged to apply to the DST-NRF internship program when it opens around November each year.

CLS has limited opportunities for interns each year.
What would you do?
You would conduct research in an area that CLS is currently engaging with, and write up your findings. You may be required to attend meetings, seminars, or workshops, and assist with other project-related activities.
What qualifications should you have?
- Ideally, a law degree (from any country), although social science and humanities graduates would also be considered
- Good English language, comprehension, and writing skills
- Concern about the issues that are addressed in CLS’s work
- A commitment to contributing to social change and justice in South Africa.
How long should you stay?
To be an intern you need to be able to spend at least two months at CLS. This is important because it takes at least two months to understand the needs of any project and produce useful work for it.
