University Of Cape Town Exchange Program

There are a number of different options for GSB students to participate in an exchange program abroad, ranging from one week to 3 months. For normal exchanges, tuition fees at host schools are waived, but students are responsible for their travel, accommodation, visa, medical and subsistence fees.
We currently have 45 partner schools on the full semester exchange and/or short exchange opportunities, and another 32 leading global business schools for the GNAM week that you can choose from for your exchange opportunity.

There are three options for GSB students to participate in an international experience:

  1. Exchange for a term/semester
This is when you choose a school and stay with them for a whole term. This is usually between 3-6 months or can be as short as 6 weeks, depending on the school. More information is available in the various schools’ fact sheets. For more information about each school, students should go to Vula to view Exchange Fact Sheets, exchange application deadlines, and application forms.
  2. Summer Schools
There are several schools that run short-term exchange programs, which specialize in a particular discipline. These include Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), ESSEC (France), Jönköping International Business School (Sweden), WHU in Vallender and Düsseldorf (Germany), PBC School of Finance, Tsinghua University (China), the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), Warsaw School of Economics, Toulouse Business School and UCLA Anderson School of Management (Los Angeles). For more information about each school, students should go to Vula to view Exchange Fact Sheets, exchange application deadlines, and application forms.
  3. Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM)
The GSB is a member of The Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM), which gives you more opportunities to study abroad, especially when you don’t have much free time. For more information about GNAM, please visit http://advancedmanagement.net. In 2016 GSB students participated in GNAM network immersion weeks at inter alia IE Business School in Madrid, Yale School of Management, HKUST in Hong Kong, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in Geneva, Switzerland. Other options included FGV-EASP in Brazil, Hitotsubashi ICS in Japan, Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia in Canada, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Israel, and EGADE Business School in Mexico. How do I apply to go on exchange?

If you are interested in studying abroad on exchange, you will need to

  • be enrolled in a full-time degree program at UCT at the time of application.
  • Attend a presentation to learn more about opportunities for exchange.
  • Find out which of our partner universities offers courses that meet the requirements of your degree and the associated prices by researching them.
  • Consult an academic advisor to discuss your goals and the process of choosing courses.

You must have finished your first year of study, have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 65% for students who are classified as redress, or at least 70% for students who are in the non-redress (open) category, and have the approval of your faculty or academic department in order to be eligible for exchange.

Due to the requirement that all exit-level courses be taken at UCT, undergraduate students can only travel abroad during the second semester of their second year of study. Anytime during their studies, postgraduate students may participate in an exchange program.

Successful candidates will be invited to an interview with the selection committee, which determines your eligibility for an exchange program and determines where you will be placed at one of the partner universities abroad.
