Applying for URC accreditation
Research groupings must be accredited by the University Research Committee (URC) in order to formally establish their existence. Research consortiums have the option of applying for three- or five-year accreditation status. If the application satisfies all of the accreditation requirements (listed below), emerging research groupings (i.e., organizations in the early phases of development) can often apply for a three-year research grouping accreditation. Following accreditation, the research grouping must offer incentives for ongoing research collaboration. All accredited research groups must also undergo an evaluation every five years to keep their accreditation.
Benefits of accreditation
The group’s identity and branding are strengthened by accredited status, which also offers a collaborative platform that is recognized by the government. Every five years, the URC finances an external peer-review procedure that offers a chance for self-evaluation and promotion in addition to hosting two eminent experts in the relevant subject. The evaluation brings the grouping to the attention of the Faculty and necessitates that the dean situates the review report within the framework of the Faculty’s own planning and budget.
It should be highlighted that recognized research groupings are expected to raise their own money through research grants and contracts and get no direct financial support from the URC. As research is essential to Faculty identity, deans are expected to take their accredited groupings’ demands into account when developing faculty programs. Infrastructure requirements and administrative assistants must be worked out with the host Faculty. Support for cross-faculty groupings may be negotiated together.
Additionally, groups that have recently undergone review and received favorable reports (including those certified by the South African Medical Research Council) are asked to submit a competitive offer for a postdoctoral fellowship. Each year, four to five of these scholarships are made available, but only if URC funding is available.
Application and Approval Process for Accreditation as a Research Grouping
The applicant needs to ensure that the Application Checklist for Accreditation Proposals (available from the Research Office) is completed.
The candidate submits the application to the dean for approval through the appropriate head of department.
If the application is approved, the dean must give the URC a concise explanation of why and how the Faculty would support the grouping. The research office receives the approved application so it can be displayed at the URC.
- URC evaluates the application using predetermined standards. Should it be necessary, the URC has the authority to reclassify the application into the proper category after consulting with the research grouping and associated dean.
- The application’s outcome is communicated to the research group, head of department, and dean. If the URC approves the plan, a summary of the application is submitted to the SEC for approval before being published in the ensuing Principal’s Circular.
Accredited Units
The University Research Committee (URC) accredits research institutions. Each research unit has a specific research mandate that mostly pertains to one field and is housed in one of the departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). The Medical Research Council of South Africa (MRC) has co-recognized certain of the authorized Faculty’s research divisions.
