Audiologists and speech-language pathologists assist those who have trouble hearing, speaking, or swallowing. At UCT, the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders is dedicated to training the next generation of specialists in the discipline and conducting world-class research.
In addition to having a significant presence in local research, the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders also publishes and presents work on a global scale.
Communication Sciences & Disorders Undergraduate Programmes
The Division provides the BSc (Audiology) and BSc (Speech-Language Pathology) degree programs for undergraduates. Both require four years of full-time education.
The SLP and Audiology Division takes pride in its cutting-edge curricula, which are regularly reviewed, assessed, and updated to make sure they are meeting the demands of the nation, the industry, employers, and students. Our goal is to generate graduates who can make a difference in any situation they work in because they are academically strong, clinically competent, and professional.
Students register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as either speech therapists or an audiologist after successfully completing the four-year curriculum. Before becoming registered as an independent practitioner, recent graduates must finish a year of community service.
Communication Sciences & Disorders Research
In addition to having a significant presence in local research, the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders also publishes and presents work on a global scale.
The Department’s research focuses on clinical needs and theoretical issues related to speech, language, hearing, communication, and swallowing.
Communication Sciences & Disorders Postgraduate Programmes
The Division’s well-liked and vibrant postgraduate programs are research-driven and seek to provide fresh, pertinent knowledge that will advance the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology.
Inquiries from prospective students who want to do research in the area of Communication Sciences and Disorders are welcomed by the division.
Three-degree Programmes (by dissertation) are offered:
- MSc. in Audiology (by dissertation)
- MSc. in Speech-Language Pathology (by dissertation).
Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology / Audiology (by dissertation).

Entrance Requirements (MSc Programmes)
A candidate must possess a BSc in speech-language pathology, audiology, or orthopedics from the institution of Cape Town or possess a comparable degree from any other college or institution approved by the Senate. Other applicants will only be taken into consideration at the head of the division’s and senate’s discretion. You must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (or be eligible to register) in order to collect data in South Africa.

Pre-requisites
By the end of the first year of study, the student must have finished a general postgraduate-level research methods course for both the MSc in Audiology and the MSc in Speech-Language Pathology. To support students’ learning and development, supervisors may also suggest particular courses.
Description of Degree Programmes
Preliminary Requirements:
Students interested in pursuing a Master’s degree should submit a letter of intent to study to Dr. Michal Harty, Head of Division, or Christine Rogers, Postgraduate Convenor. Your area of interest and selected primary supervisor must be stated in your letter of intent to study. You will be assigned a co-supervisor in addition to the principal one. You will get information about the role and responsibilities of supervisors as well as procedural concerns at the orientation, and your supervisor and you will write a memorandum of understanding.
