UCT Courses Humanities Undergraduate

Do you have a deep passion for understanding human expression, culture, and society? Many undergraduate humanities courses are available at the University of Cape Town (UCT), encouraging your intellectual curiosity and giving you the foundational knowledge needed for a variety of jobs. The humanities studies at UCT encourage critical thinking, cultural awareness, and effective communication, laying the foundation for both individual development and career success.

Being fully immersed in disciplines that examine the human experience, society, art, language, history, and more is what studying humanities at UCT entails. The courses are made to stimulate your intellectual curiosity, promote in-depth thought, and increase your comprehension of the outside world. The undergraduate humanities programs at UCT offer a strong basis for development both personally and academically, regardless of your interests in literature, social dynamics, art, or cultural studies.

UCT Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Entry to Humanities Undergraduate programs depends on your Faculty Point Score (FPS) and National Benchmark Test (NBT) results. Performing and Creative Arts programs additionally require a successful audition/portfolio.

Entrance requirements

Entrance requirements for all undergraduate programs in the Humanities Faculty can be found in the Undergraduate Prospectus.

Calculating admission points

All candidates taking the National Senior Certificate are required to have their NSCs endorsed for degree courses or for diploma studies if they have chosen this route. A Faculty Point Scoring System is utilized for candidates taking the NSC as well as those who previously took the Senior Certificate. This system awards points for subjects successfully completed as shown in the FPS table (see links below). English and the following five top topics (apart from Life Orientation) receive admission points. Please spend some time reading through the admissions guidance page below:

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs)

The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) assess a writer’s aptitude for dealing with the entry-level academic literacy, quantitative literacy, and mathematical challenges they would encounter during their university studies. Universities in South Africa utilize them to assess a writer’s suitability for advanced study.

If you want to apply for undergraduate studies, you can view additional information about the NBTs. To select test dates and gain access to the online reservation system, download the 2023 NBT booklet.

Auditions & portfolios

Only our performing and creative arts programs require auditions and portfolios for admission. Please be aware that no applications for admittance into our performing and creative arts programs will be taken into consideration without the provision of the necessary audition materials (for candidates to the music, dance, and drama programs) or a portfolio (for applicants to the fine art programs).

Fine Art

Candidates must submit a portfolio of their work to the Michaelis School of Fine Art in addition to the normal UCT application (which must be submitted to the main Admissions Office). A portfolio should have at least ten pieces of art, either originals or excellent color photographs, that demonstrate the creator’s capacity for observation and creativity. You may get further details and suggestions on how to put up your portfolio by getting in touch with the school or going to the Michealis School of Fine Art website. The selection committee evaluates, ranks, and recommends candidates to the Faculty.

Candidates must have an adequate FPS score, NBT score, and portfolio recommendation in order to be considered for an offer from the Faculty of Humanities Undergraduate Office. The portfolio suggestion is the leading signal as long as the FPS score is higher than the limit.

Theatre and Performance

In comparison to the selection procedure for the Diploma in Theatre and Performance, the BA Theatre and Performance degree selection process is different. Participants in the live audition for the Diploma in Theatre and Performance are required. A video audition must be uploaded using the departmental website’s upload forms by candidates for the BA in Theatre and Performance.

Candidates are evaluated for admission to the BA Theatre and Performance program based on the talents and abilities displayed in their video auditions, as well as on a reference letter and submitted essay.

The Selection Panel interviews candidates in person and chooses the top audition performances for the Diploma in Theatre and Performance. The applicants’ unique skills and aptitudes are evaluated, together with their capacity to collaborate with others in a group setting, and consideration is given to the makeup of the class as a whole. Along with the NBT score, applicants are required to submit an essay as an extra measure of their writing prowess.

Music

Candidates are interviewed by the SACM selection panels, and the Head of Department (HoD) then recommends candidates to the Faculty Office. The Faculty Office extends offers to candidates who have been recommended by the selection panels for either the degree or diploma program, depending on their FPS score and NBT performance. The audition performance serves as the leading signal as long as the FPS score is higher than the cutoff. All candidates are required to arrive prepared for their auditions. To get help with the audition, be sure to communicate with the appropriate department.
