UCT Courses Humanities Postgraduate
The goal of the postgraduate programs is to develop graduates’ intellectual and technical skills so they can engage with challenges of change at all levels of South African social and public life critically and come up with innovative solutions. The theoretical and practical instruction is intended to equip students for a variety of professional and academic career routes within and outside of South Africa, as well as to prepare them for leadership in research, policy, and decision-making.
The established experience of faculty members, four SARChI Research Chairs, two Mellon Research Chairs, and a variety of nationally and globally renowned research institutes that are at the forefront of research and policy development are all tapped into by humanities postgraduate programs. Postgraduate students have access to specialized libraries, the newest communication and information technologies, and a variety of creative and interdisciplinary programs.
Students enroll in a program of study in a certain faculty department and complete the necessary core courses and electives. Every year, at least one of such electives can be taken from a course offered by another department. This gives students access to a wider variety of courses and teaching staff than any one department can supply, allowing them to follow their academic interests within a more flexible plan of study. Graduates move on to the further academic levels:
  • Honours degree which is usually one year in duration; then on to a
  • Master’s degree either by coursework and research or by research only; and then to a
  • Ph.D.

The Faculty is particularly proud of its record of attracting top candidates to its Masters’s and Ph.D. programs and of supervising them to graduation in a reasonable time. Policies and guidelines for postgraduate programs in Humanities are set by the Graduate Programmes Committee, which is chaired by the Deputy Dean of Postgraduate Studies.
