Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment

Interdisciplinary studies in development

Interdisciplinary research is supported by the University of Cape Town. Students are encouraged to choose courses from outside their home program, provided they complete the entry requirements for the course and get the convener’s and program’s clearance. The creation of a centralized source of information on these opportunities is a key goal of this website.

Every course on this website has to do with development. The courses are divided into two divisions, HEQSF Level 8 and HEQSF Level 9, and listed according to their home faculties.

Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs are offered by internationally acclaimed academics who are leaders in their fields. UCT Courses Engineering & the Built Environment Undergraduate

Undergraduate studies

The department offers a fully integrated undergraduate civil engineering program with modern courses in all the classic subfields of the discipline, including transportation, geotechnics, hydraulics, steel and concrete materials, and structures. The Engineering Council of South Africa has fully accredited UCT’s Bachelor of Science (Eng) in Civil Engineering. At least four years must be spent in school to earn the degree. The following are the civil engineering specialties at UCT:

Postgraduate studies

The department offers a wide range of postgraduate programs related to research in urban water management, water quality engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and integrity of concrete and materials. There are master’s degree programs available with varying ratios of research to coursework, enabling students to tailor their education to their individual learning styles and desired career paths. The length of postgraduate courses ranges from one to three years. A block week is when some classes are offered, whereas university semesters are when others are. Career opportunities

Civil engineers can specialize in any of the many diverse aspects of the profession – project management, construction, transportation, urban engineering, water management, structural engineering, and material technology.
