Minimum Requirements for Admission

Refer to rule FB 1, in the section on Degree Rules, for the minimum formal entrance requirements for the bachelor’s degrees offered in the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment. The minimum requirements for admission to Postgraduate Diploma, Honours, and Master’s degree programs in the Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment are set out in the rules for the appropriate postgraduate diplomas/degrees. Postgraduate Degrees

The Faculty provides several postgraduate programs and specializations that present intriguing opportunities for additional learning and research. Programs for Postgraduate Diploma, Honours, Master, and Ph.D. are generally organized within the departments, but the Faculty Office is responsible for processing applications for admission to the programs. The Faculty Handbook contains the regulations and policies pertaining to the degrees.

The Faculty’s Postgraduate Planning and Administration Committee creates the rules and regulations for the degrees, which are then approved by the Faculty Board and, as necessary, the Senate. A Deputy Dean serves as the Committee’s chair.

Entrance requirements

Honours degrees

A three-year bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field.

Postgraduate diplomas and Masters’s degrees

An appropriate four-year bachelor’s degree or Honours equivalent is required, but applicants who are holders of three-year qualifications plus a minimum of 5 years relevant senior working experience (post-Bachelors qualification) may be considered for admission.

Master’s Degrees in City & Regional Planning, City Planning & Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture: for these structured two-year Masters’s degrees in the School of Architecture, Planning & Geomatics, an appropriate three-year Bachelor’s qualification.

Doctoral degrees

At the doctoral degree level, three qualifications are offered:

The Ph.D.: This is a University-wide research degree. The standard entrance requirement is a Masters’s degree

The DArch and the DSc(Eng): these are rarely awarded senior doctorates, for example, for published work that has established the author as a world authority. Detailed information on doctoral degrees is obtainable from the Faculty Office.
