International Applicants Admission Requirements

Admission of international applicants is subject to meeting both the university and the Faculty admission requirements as stipulated in the Admission Policy of the University of Johannesburg.

UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS

APPLICATION AND CLOSING DATE

Applications are accepted beginning on April 1 of the year before the proposed study year and must be submitted by 12:00 on October 31, 2023. You can submit an online application by visiting the provided link; APPLY HERE; if you experience any problems submitting your application online, kindly write an email.

Note: All applicants are urged not to send cash over the mail or leave money or documents with anyone who is not authorized.

UNIVERSITY FEES

Fees typically rise by between 5 and 10% annually. To get the final tuition costs for the 2024 academic year, please get in touch with the university in November 2023.

Please take note that the Department of Home Affairs requires all accepted international applicants to show proof of financial availability for the full academic year’s tuition as well as proof that they have paid for a full academic year’s worth of medical insurance administered in South Africa before being granted a study visa.

All overseas students who are privately supported (by themselves, their parents, or a guardian) must pay the following for tuition and housing (on-campus residences):

  • An upfront payment of 30% of tuition and residence fees must be paid before or at registration.
  • 35% of the tuition and residence fees are to be paid by 30 April.
  • 35% of the tuition and residence fees are to be paid by 31 July.

International levy 2023

The following levies must be paid in accordance with the above-mentioned costs, together with the International Levy, Registration Fee, and ICT Levy, which are non-refundable. PLEASE BE AWARE that the International Levy expires annually on December 31.

  • SADC- and other African Countries – (Postgraduate, Undergraduate, Full time, Part time) – R2 000-00
  • Other countries – R17 000.00
  • Occasional and Non-degree purposes/practical training – R8 000.00
  • Asylum Seeker/Refugees/Permanent Residence and Exchange students – NONE
  • Non-subsidized courses – R1 000.00

ALL INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS ARE TO TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Submit a completed application form with supporting documents together with a non-refundable application fee of R200.00
  • Online applications are free
  • Supporting documents may be uploaded on the application platform or emailed to intappsdocs@listsrv.uj.ac.za
  • Final School leaving results when applying with international credentials or currently in Grade 12 (Final Grade 11 results)
  • Valid Passport Identity Document or Birth Certificate
  • Sworn English Translation of documents (Documents issued in any language other than English)
  • Provide proof of English Proficiency where English was not used as a medium of learning and teaching (the University prefers the applicant to take the IELTS at an overall score of 6 and TOEFL at an average score of 80–104 for Undergraduate programs) alternatively, you may elect to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP). Should you choose to write the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme Test (UJELP), Mr. Malibongwe Masango will be the contact person for UJELP.   • In a case where both first and second choices were unsuccessful, the International Admissions Office will offer an international applicant an alternative choice option when meeting the requirements
  • Should you require on-campus accommodation, please submit a completed residence application form at the same time you apply to study at UJ

Checklist for applying

  • Valid email address (Gmail or Yahoo mail account).
  • Have the prerequisites for the study options been satisfied? To view the Undergraduate Prospectus and learn more about the minimal entrance criteria, click HERE.
  • If you have finished Grade 12 (see procedure below), you can submit certified and individually scanned papers.
  • Online candidates must upload the following documents; applicants presently enrolled in grade 12 or internal transfers or seniors are exempt from this requirement:
  • All documentation needs to be certified.
  • Make sure the scanned file is no larger than 512 KB.
  • All documents are scanned in either tiff, pdf, jpg, or gif format.
  • It is necessary to scan and upload each document as a separate attachment.
  • As an alternative, documents can be emailed to ujappdocs@listsrv.uj.ac.za with the student number or provisional reference listed in the subject line.

New applicants

  • Before submitting an application, please check the Undergraduate Prospectus by clicking HERE to make sure you meet the minimal entrance criteria.
  • Applications can be submitted electronically (FREE) or on paper (R200.00). For more help submitting a hardcopy, feel free to get in touch with our Call Center at 011 559 4555 or send an email to mylife@uj.ac.za.
  • Only two study options may be applied per academic year. Once these study options have been decided, they cannot be changed.
  • The University of Johannesburg accepts students simultaneously. As a result, if an applicant is qualified for both options, they may be admitted to/provisionally chosen for both. When a candidate has been accepted for both options, it is up to the candidate to select the qualification for which they want to register. The alternate option won’t be immediately accepted if you haven’t registered for it.
  • Applications for candidates who are retaking Grade 12 courses will be handled using the most recent results. If you took Grade 12 more than once, you must submit your combined results together with your application.
  • By selecting “National Senior Certificate” on the Results Detail page of the online application process, candidates who are writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) through the IEB or SACAI examining organizations may apply.
  • For the purpose of verification and auditing, applicants who are currently in Grade 12 may be asked to submit certified copies of their final Grade 11 test results.
  • The American General Education Development (GED) test will not be accepted by the University of Johannesburg for admittance into its undergraduate curriculum. Applicants who have earned their American GED and wish to pursue an undergraduate degree at UJ must get a grade 12 NSC/IEB/SACAI or an international equivalent.
  • The National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) are not a part of UJ’s admissions standards, and candidates are not required to take the NBTs in order to apply for or be admitted to UJ. In uncommon cases where the applicant is in possession of an exceptional school leaving certificate, the applicant may be required to write the NBTs.
  • The University of Johannesburg wants to warn you against people and businesses who charge a fee to help with applications while making out to be affiliated with or working for the University of Johannesburg. We warn you not to become a victim of such a scam because online applications are free.

  • The University of Johannesburg accepts students simultaneously. As a result, if an applicant is qualified for both options, they may be admitted to/provisionally chosen for both. When a candidate has been accepted for both options, it is up to the candidate to select the qualification for which they want to register. The alternate option won’t be immediately accepted if you haven’t registered for it.
  • Contact the UJ Call Center at 011 559 4555 to confirm or update your mobile number or email address.
  • When applying, students who are transferring from another university or higher institution must disclose their prior coursework and attach a complete transcript of their grades and degree or diploma certificate (if applicable). Using your current UJ student number, choose “Request a PIN” if you’ve forgotten your pin. You will receive a PIN via the registered email address. After that, log in with your student ID and the given PIN.
  • The American General Education Development (GED) test will not be accepted by the University of Johannesburg for admittance into its undergraduate curriculum. Applicants who have earned their American GED and wish to pursue an undergraduate degree at UJ must get a grade 12 NSC/IEB/SACAI or an international equivalent.
